Update 5/4/2003

The weeks have gone by all to quickly.

Baby John continues to do very well.

The doctors at Children’s Hospital are very happy with John’s progress.

Mommy and all his family are amazed, Baby John is very active. Follows his musical mobile over his baby bed and smiles at Mommy while bathing and caring for him. As soon as Mom holds him he falls to sleep in her loving arm pit @ a ; )

The hospital is teaching Mommy to do all his care and she loves every moment of it.

Baby John weights 10’9 and is now on a formula that agrees with him (Pregestmil). Bowels are moving good.

Baby John has had another surgery. The doctors seem to think that it would be best at this point for a Tracheotomy.

A tracheotomy is performed if enough air is not getting to the lungs, if the person cannot breathe without help, or is having problems with mucus and other secretions getting into the windpipe because of difficulty swallowing. There are many reasons why air cannot get to the lungs. The patient's windpipe may be blocked by swelling, or need a ventilator to pump air into the lungs for a long period of time. I realize that this all sounds really bad but as of now this condition is just temporary.

In Baby John’s case the doctors want to let everything heal from effects of ventilator from swelling and mucus. The doctors still have John on ventilator at 21 to 25 witch is good, almost normal and they are winging him off. He does not need the oxygen; He needs the pressure from the ventilator. There is some weakness in the lungs but this to should heal in time. This to is temporary. Having the Track will also help with the lungs.

CDH babies do not eat by mouth. Baby John is being feed thru a tub in his nose. He will (most likely) be having another surgery in a few weeks to put a G tub in his stomach for feeding.

This condition is also temporary. His airway is uncertain therefore he cannot take fluids in fear of (Fluids going in lungs). Baby John should be able to eat in time.

His blood gases are very good; He’s about winged off all medications that were making him sleepy and for pain.

Baby John got to meet his Brother (Christian age 7 and

Sister Casey age 4) Easter Sunday for the very first time.

They all seemed to enjoy very much.

Baby John’s eyes where wide open to see what was going on with all the noise @ a ; ).

Christian and Casey couldn’t keep their hands off the baby.

Baby John really is such a putty baby as a very proud Grandma admits…… ; )

Chastity and all of our family sends out a special Thank-you to all who have Prayed and sent cards.

We appreciate all of you so very much.

We appreciate the Doctors and Nurses @ Children’s Hospital and all the caring people at the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati, Ohio.
